Rangoon and Mandalay


The governing regime has changed the name from "Rangoon" to "Yangon," along with "Burma" to "Myanmar." The Burmese script is unique to Burma.

Though large cities are rare in Burma, Rangoon looks like many others in Asia. Population of Rangoon is 4.3 milion, which is 10% of the country.

The Shwedagon Pagoda, located in the center of Rangoon, is the religious soul of Burma and the landmark of the city. A huge complex, the site includes 14 acres and dozens of pagodas, temples, and shrines.

Eight shrines surrounding the main pagoda represent the eight days of the Burmese week. Individuals make offerings and anoint the statue at the fountain representing the actual weekday of their birth. Here Eli participates.

As required in all temples and pagodas in Burma, we traversed the grounds in bare feet and were in awe of the elaborate decorations.
